The path toward evolving as a leader is rarely a straight line; for me this is a continuous, intentional inward journey of self-reflection and gleaning from those who are in the places and spaces I desire to be, leading in ways that make people forget they’re following.
I’ve committed to a diverse collective of growth spaces—as led by prayer and as my calendar allows. The African Leadership Group (ALG) is one of those divine assignments, and let me tell you, the investment has been worth every bit of what I have and will be pouring into it.
The depth of this experience leaves me wishing we met more than once a month; when our scheduled Saturdays conclude, there is a collective sense of “Is it over already?”
The beauty in tapestry of this cohort
The ethnic diversity within our cohort is nothing short of touring an eclectic museum. And the offset of sharpened colored pencils and neon sidewalk chalk that draws my eyes towards the canvas and my intrigue to youthful mind explosions. It reminds me that although we may be centered in a box, they have no sides or tops and it’s up to us the set parameters where and when we need them..
I’ve decided I want to learn French hanging around these people. The Synergy never out of sync Our professors are exceptionally gifted, blending creativity with high-level engagement tactics.
Beyond the lecture: A space for transformation
This journey, starting from day one of orientation, has been far more than an eight-hour lecture series. It is a masterclass in:
- Direction & Guidance: Navigating the various dimensions of leadership.
- Exchange & Networking: Building bridges with Denver’s finest professionals.
- Uplifting & Accountability: Moving beyond comfort zones into a space of “personal risk.”
One of the most impressive milestones thus far has been the mentor “speed-dating” session. We were introduced to a formidable lineup of leaders from finance, mortgage lending/real estate, civic engagement, corporate operations, health and wellness, education and beyond. The only disappointment was the realization that I could only choose one.
The mirror of ethics and values
In our most recent session, we engaged in a powerful exercise centered on ethics, judgment, and values. It was a “truth-telling” moment that served as a mirror for our own morals. For many, the self-reflection was affirming; for others, it provided a necessary reality check on areas requiring personal growth.
The exercise highlighted a crucial leadership lesson: Morality and principles are not universal monoliths. They are shaped by culture, experience, and perception. To lead effectively, one must commit to open communication and active listening for acceptance before reaching a conclusion, determining inclusion or exclusion for that matter.
Looking ahead
While the program demands high standards—reading and writing assignments, group projects, and strict organizational etiquette—the rewards are unparalleled. As we head into our third session, there is a palpable sense of eager anticipation. We aren’t just learning about leadership; we are being pushed to go higher and be greater, we cant lose!
Let’s go higher!
