Since the COVID-19 pandemic began early in 2020, the African Leadership Group has worked to get direct cash assistance, in the form of gift cards, to people facing immediate needs.
We were able to help people last summer thanks to a grant from the Colorado Health Foundation. Over the holidays, a grant from the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation and the nonprofit TNTP.
Here is how one assistance recipient thanked us for our help:
I am very grateful for the assistance you accorded to me by way of gift cards.
These gifts sustained me for all this period when I received the operation. I underwent a heart operation and they found that my heart was too weak to keep me living.
They therefore decided to implant a machine called a pacemaker to support my heart. That’s how I have been able to start walking again.
This goes with a lot of medicine on a daily basis which is expensive and yet I do not have any work because of my status. I will never be able to do any heavy work again.
