We must honor our mothers with more than one day a year

Sunday, May 9 is Mother’s Day 2021. Let us all take this occasion to recognize and appreciate our mothers, whether they are alive or have passed on.

In this country, many people celebrate Mother’s Day by taking their mother or spouse out to brunch. While this is a nice custom that shows appreciation, it would be a pity if the commemoration were to stop there.

Consider writing your mother a note, telling her why you appreciate her and what important life lessons she taught you. That note is something she will cherish forever, long after the brunch is a distant memory. Or, if possible tell her face-to-face how much she means to you.

We should also make sure that Mother’s Day does not represent just an annual occasion, one time each year when we show mothers all the love they deserve. It can also be used as an opportunity for children and spouses to reflect on how they interact daily with that very important woman in their lives. Does your relationship convey respect and appreciation? Can you try to say one affirming thing to her each day?

Parenting is the most rewarding (and challenging) job most of us ever have. We should all pause every day and give thanks to our mothers, and to the mothers of our children.
