Ousman Ba: Why I am running for Aurora Public Schools board

Editor’s note: As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, ALG cannot and does not endorse candidates for political office. The following is published for informational and educational purposes, and reflects the personal views of the author.

When I came to Aurora as a young man, I was searching for opportunity and belonging.

Education became the bridge that carried me into this community and allowed me to build a life here. That experience shapes everything I believe about our schools, and why I am running for the Aurora Public Schools Board of Education.

For years, I have mentored youth and supported families. I have seen what happens when schools wrap around a student with care and high expectations: Young people who were ready to give up rediscover their potential.

I have also seen what happens when families feel shut out or when teachers don’t get the support they need: Frustration builds and opportunities are lost.

Aurora’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths. In our classrooms, students from every corner of the world sit side by side, bringing resilience, creativity, and perspective. That diversity should be celebrated and turned into opportunity for all.

I am running because I believe:

  • Students must come first. Every decision we make should begin with the question: Does this help our kids thrive?
  • Educators deserve support. Teachers and staff should have the resources, training, and respect they need to succeed.
  • Families must be partners. Parents and guardians should be heard and valued as co-creators of student success.
  • The community deserves transparency. Decision-making and budgets must be open and accountable.

This is not about politics for me. It is about doing what is right for our kids and our city. It is wrong to leave any student behind, and it is right to give every child a fair chance to learn, graduate, and step into their future with confidence.

No single person can fix our schools, but I believe in the power of community. When families, educators, students, and neighbors come together, Aurora can build a school system that lives up to its promise.

That is why I am running.
