The ALG Parent Engagement Committee recently welcomed Dr. Amy Hutton, Director of Inclusive Community Engagement at the University of Colorado Boulder, for a transformative dialogue.
This meeting represented more than a formal introduction—it marked a deliberate step toward fostering meaningful partnerships between CU Boulder and our diverse community.
Dr. Hutton approached our gathering with genuine intent to connect, listen, and learn directly from families and students. She articulated her vision for creating robust pathways that enable students from underrepresented communities to access and excel in higher education. Her commitment extends beyond recruitment to ensuring students thrive and develop an authentic sense of belonging.
At ALG, we recognize that academic success is rooted in homes and communities long before college begins. Our Parent Engagement Committee empowers students and parents to address issues directly affecting them across the educational spectrum from K-12 through higher education. The committee amplifies family voices, advocates for improved access and equity, and provides continuous support throughout students’ academic journeys.
What made Dr. Hutton’s visit special was that our ALG parents and students had a voice at the table. Families openly shared their hopes, their challenges, and their desire for clear and accessible pathways to college. Students spoke about what excites them about college, but also what worries them. There were candid conversations about financial aid, navigating application systems, and how to stay connected and supported throughout the journey.
Dr. Hutton emphasized CU Boulder’s commitment to creating an environment where students are both educated and empowered. She highlighted the importance of collaborative relationships between the university and families, schools, and communities like ours.
Discussions encompassed plans for campus visits, application support, and follow-up systems to keep students on track post-admission. Dr. Hutton expressed CU Boulder’s dedication to better serving and maintaining connections with enrolled students, particularly those from traditionally underserved communities.
What resonated deeply with many in the room was Dr. Hutton’s recognition of our community’s strong college-bound mindset, along with her respect for students who choose alternative paths. She made it clear: success isn’t one-size-fits-all, and CU Boulder wants to walk alongside students wherever their goals may lead.
The ALG parent engagement committee was both inspired and encouraged by this visit. We see this as a starting point for a partnership that centers student voice, family engagement, and access to opportunity. Dr. Hutton’s openness, respect, and commitment to equity left a lasting impression on everyone present.
We appreciate this valuable connection and anticipate continued collaboration through future visits and initiatives designed to empower our students and families.
