The African Leadership Group is looking for a few good tutors.
Our tutoring program helped support students in grades in several school districts during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, when much of the learning moved online. Some students struggled with that new system, and our tutors were able to provide support to keep those students up to speed.
While almost everyone is back in-person now, the tutoring program continues, and is in need of several volunteer tutors for this school year.
Yaneash Donaldson, who helps coordinate the program, said tutors are needed Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. mountain time, and from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Tutoring takes place remotely.
“We are looking for people who are passionate about helping young people, elementary school through high school, improve their academic success in the core subjects of English, social studies, science and math,” Yaneash said. “If you have teaching experience, that would be amazing, but if you’re just really good at a subject and want to help out, we would love that.”
The tutoring opportunity is also good for high school students seeking community service hours, Yaneash said, as well as college students wanting to get involved in a worthwhile community endeavor.
Currently, about 25 students are enrolled in the tutoring program, and Yaneash and her team are seeking four or five more tutors. That way, she said, each tutor would be assigned no more than two students.
Third-grader Naomi Halefom started in ALG’s tutoring program last year, when she was in second grade. One-on-one tutoring in math and social studies has helped her improve in both subjects. “It has helped me with my multiplication tables, because they were hard for me at first,” Naomi said.
